A state law banning bumper stickers with lewd or offensive messages wrongfully restricts a
motorist's right to self-expression, the Georgia Supreme Court has ruled. The ruling on Friday came in
the first challenge to the law, which went into effect in July 1987 and prohibited stickers or emblems describing sexual acts, excretory functions or parts of the human body. Writing for the court, Chief Justice Harold G. Clarke said, "The peace of society is not endangered by the profane or lewd word which is not directed at a particular audience.

Political Buttons and Car Stickers Seem as a Sign of the Times
It may have more to do with politics than fashion, but a lot of voters this fall seem to be favoring the uncommitted look. They are wearing their lapels bare and their automobile bumpers uncovered.
The button and the bumper sticker, two staples of personal political merchandising, are just not showing up much on the street this season, even though the campaigns of Gov. Michael S. Dukakis and Vice President Bush
say they are turning them out in large quantities.
Here in Chicago, where election enthusiasm in past years has even raised the dead to vote, a row-by-row search of the parking lots at OHare
International Airport this week turned up only five campaign bumper stickers among more than a thousand cars, a remarkable display of political nonchalance with Election Day less than six weeks off.
I don't get it, said Barbara Opacki, an official at Governor Dukakis's headquarters in Boston.
We make all these bumper stickers and buttons because people scream to have them, and then they all
disappear into some black hole.
The Missing Stickers?
At Vice President Bush's headquarters in Washington, Sig Rogisch, the campaign's advertising director, was similarly nonplused. It is become the big joke around here that there must be some guy out there with tens of thousands of our
bumper stickers hidden in his closet, he said. They certainly are not on cars.
Considering the preoccupation so many consumers seem to have these days with labels on their running shoes, sweatshirts and jeans, this seeming reluctance among voters to label themselves politically raises interesting speculation about the current national mood.
Some suggest that the dearth of buttons and bumper stickers is just an obvious reflection of what a lot of public opinion polls have labored mightily to conclude: voters are not very enthusiastic about either Mr. Dukakis or Mr. Bush.
The more intensely people feel about a candidate or an issue, the more likely they are to wear it on their car or their lapel, said Geary Vlk, the president of the
American Political Items Collectors. That is why you still see so many Reagan bumper stickers around on
cars.
The Disappearing Bumper Sticker
Others, like Mr. Rogisch, eschew such political analysis. He thinks people are not using bumper stickers in part because they are loath to put anything on their cars that might leave a mark.
talking about the coming Presidential debate. Suddenly, I noticed something odd: there were virtually no political bumper stickers on the cars speeding along Interstate 95.
Through the 1970s and 80s bumper stickers were a distinctive part of American popular
culture. Paul Harvey, on his daily radio broadcast, would announce the best of those his
listeners had spotted across the United States. But now that phenomenon is palpably in decline.
Yes, there's still the occasional single-issue bumper sticker in view
-- Boycott Veal, Support Our Troops, Guns Don't Kill People, People Do.
But the political campaign kind has almost disappeared.
