Calendar Online History

The British Calendar Act of 1751, which declared the day after Wednesday the second to be Thursday the fourteenth. Prior to that September evening, the official British calendar differed from that of continental Europe by eleven days that is, September 2 in London was September 13 in Paris, Lisbon, and Berlin. The discrepancy had sprung from the Britain continued use of the Julian calendar, which had been the official calendar of Europe since its invention by Roman Julius Caesar (after whom it was named) in 45 B.C. The solar year is about eleven days longer than twelve lunar months. The Bible doesn't directly mention the addition of intercalary months. However, without the insertion of embolismic months, Hebrew festivals would gradually shift outside of the seasons required by the Torah. This has been ruled as implying a requirement for the insertion of embolismic months to reconcile the lunar cycles to the seasons, which are integral to solar yearly cycles. The Julius Caesar calendar, which consisted of eleven months of 30 or 31 days and a 28-day February (extended to 29 days every fourth year), was actually quite accurate: it erred from the real solar calendar by only 11½ minutes a year. After centuries, though, even a small difference like mounts up. By the sixteenth century, it had put the Julian calendar behind the solar calendar by about 10 days. Before today’s Gregorian calendar was adopted, the older Julian calendar was used. It was admirably close to the actual length of the year, as it turns out, but the Julian calendar was not so perfect that it slowly shifted off track over the following centuries. But, hundreds of years later, Catholic monks were the only ones with any free time for scholarly pursuits, and they were discouraged from thinking about the matter of secular time for any reason beyond figuring out when we should observe Easter. In the dark Middle Ages, the study of the measure of time was first viewed as prying too deeply into Gods own affairs – and later thought of as a lowly, secular study, unworthy of any contemplation.
